The Adult Formation Class will study the apostle Paul's letters to the Philippians and Colossians for the next three months. As you know, Paul had persecuted the earliest followers of Jesus. However, the Lord still called on Paul to be an important messenger of the Gospel to the Gentiles. Paul personally established churches and wrote divinely inspired letters throughout Greece and Asia Minor, including those Christians living in Philippi and Colossae. His letters contained statements about faith, hope, and the divine nature of Jesus Christ.
The church on Colossae was the target of those who were promoting heresies among believers. Paul wrote a carefully written letter to refute the false teaching that the Colossae church was experiencing. In doing so, Paul gave us an invaluable understanding of the true nature and character of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Paul probably wrote these letters between A.D. 60 to A.D. 70 while under arrest in Rome for preaching the "Good News of Jesus Christ". The Philippi (in Greece) church members sent money and their support to the arrested Paul. He was most appreciative and wrote a letter to thank them for their kindness and urged them to remain strong and united in their faith in Christ.
Colossae was a city in Asia Minor (present-day Turkey). Paul's letter provides instructions concerning false teachers who were promoting an extreme form of Judaism. These false teachers were requiring strict adherence to rituals and regulations. Paul stated brilliantly that Christ was divine, sovereign, and most capable as the reconciler of sinful humanity to God.
