Ascension’s Mission Statement
“DISCIPLES OF CHRIST CALLED TO SERVE NEIGHBORS NEAR AND FAR”

The Sunday Journal

Greetings and a warm welcome to all.

“Coats for Christ” was a huge success and so many wonderful people came together last Sunday evening here at Ascension for prayer, music, worship, and fellowship in the name of Christ. I thank everyone who participated in this worthwhile endeavor.  Pastor David Coffman gave us an inspiring message. The combined choirs from St. John’s and Ascension, under the leadership of Marsha Cabbage, John Perry Reed, and John Sinila, carried the evening with a diverse selection of anthems and organ voluntaries. Kimberly Ellis from the Oconee County United Way gave us valuable insights into the history and mission of the  organization.  We were all grateful to the ladies of ECW who fed us before and after the service.  The list of appreciation goes on, but I believe the donation  of 337 Coats expresses it all. So often actions speak louder than words. We are reminded of these words from  St. Francis of Assisi, “Preach the Gospel, and if necessary use words.” Blessings and thank you again to all who were involved with this new outreach initiative “Coats for Christ”.

Today our appointed readings continue to lead us toward the end of the long season of Pentecost and into the long awaited time of Advent.  Our lessons for this Sunday offer hope and the promise of a new beginning and a new creation in Christ. We must be careful how we interpret these lessons.  They were not written with the intention of predicting the end of civilization.  The readings for today provide a much deeper theological insight, which reminds us that God holds us forever in God’s heart of love.

I want to encourage and invite everyone to make a new beginning by participating in one of our Sunday morning Christian Education classes which meet at 9:30.  The Adult Class I continues with its study of Thessalonians. The Adult Class II will take on the topic, “Making Sense of the Episcopal Church”.  This class will promote learning and discussion around a wide variety of subjects concerning the Episcopal Church. It will be lively and interesting, and will give us older members an opportunity for a thorough review as well as provide preparation for confirmation for those who wish to become members of the Episcopal Church. Come join us. I believe you will be surprised and pleased!!

Shalom,
Deedie+
